E-Learning

E-Learning refers to the use of internet technologies to deliver a broad array of solutions that enhance knowledge and performance. (Rosenberg 2001)

In 2002/03 the Social Policy and Social Work Learning and Teaching Support Network (SWAP/ltsn), based at Southampton University undertook a scoping exercise, and adapted some existing e-learning materials for use by social work programmes.

Download the scoping document in pdf format: Building Capacity to Support the Social Work Degree.

Since that time, much work has been done on this area, and SWAP, SCIE and others continue to offer advice and support via their websites on this topic.

The use of electronic portfolios within social work education has continued to develop over the last 5 years.
Universities nationally have piloted schemes to integrate practice learning, knowledge and skills into an e-platform that links the core requirements of social work training and education.
The Social Work Electronic Assessment Portfolio (SWEAP) has contributed to this agenda.
Over the last two years Staffordshire University and its partners with funding from Skills for Care West Midlands have developed this as a tool to support students in their practice learning opportunities. This has been done with the support of students and practice teachers from the partner agencies.
