The prescribed curriculum for the social work degree includes three elements: The Department of Health Requirements, the Skills for Care National Occupational Standards for Social Work and the QAA Benchmark Statement for Social Work. These are summarised in the Department of Health publication Requirements for Social Work Education and Training and together provide the standards against which social work students will be assessed as competent to practice. These provide the basis for the material and processes developed by Higher Education Institutions to assess students' practice learning.

The framework for the new degree opens up opportunities for a wide range of people within social work, social care and related professions to play their part in supporting and assessing practice learning; although all students must be finally assessed as competent to practice by a qualified experienced social worker.
The possible roles and functions involved in supporting and assessing practice learning are explored in the documents identified in this section. It is clear that the skills of current practice teachers and those who hold the Practice Teacher Award will be at a premium within the context of the social work degree.
In this key Position Paper the Social Care Institute for Excellence sets out a skills and qualifications framework that should support practice learning both in the new degree and across social care organisations.
